Becoming Indonesian: Teaching Pancasila at the Intersection of Education Technology and Ideology

Who gets to define what it means to be a ‘good’ citizen? Who has the power to infuence meanings in teaching a national ideology? What is the role of education technology in teaching citizenship education? In the light of Indonesia’s digitalisation of education, this doctoral dissertation looks into the recent teaching practices of citizenship education in Indonesia that has been fundamentally based on the national ideology known as Pancasila – or the Five Principles. Through an ethnographic study with interview analysis, field notes observations, and conducting document as well education videos analyses, this study emphasises the relevance of observing the meaningmaking of Pancasila through historical and governmental articulations to understand how the ideology is made-sense by teachers. Yanti Sastrawan is based at the department of Media and Communication Studies at Södertörn University, Stockholm. Her research interests concern the meaning-making practices of lived experiences at the intersection of education technology and ideology.
